Oommen Chandy: A leader of common man

Thiruvananthapuram : Identified as an able organiser and a leader of the masses, 67-year-old Oommen Chandy is known for his simple lifestyle and unsullied reputation. He is a politician who maintains a personal relationship with party workers, especially those in his constituency.

An impeccable track record of winning ten times continuously from Puthuppally Assembly constituency is an eloquent testimony of his popularity and public acceptance.

Affectionately called ''Kunjoonju,'' Mr Chandy is very much approachable to the common man. He patiently listens to their problems and tries to redress them.

Born on October 30, 1943 to Karottu Vallakkalil K V Chandy and Baby Chandy, he ventured into the political arena as an activist of Kerala Students Union (KSU), the student wing of the Congress.

He was the unit president of KSU at St George High School, Puthupally and went on to become the State President of the organisation.

For a short period, he was also the President of All Kerala Balajana Sakhyam.

He completed his college education from CMS College, Kottayam, SB College, Changanassery and Government Law College, Ernakulam.

These campuses not only bestowed knowledge, but also moulded the career of a mass leader.
