Kochi : Mar George Alencherry today took oath as as the new Archbishop of Syro-Malabar Church here at St Mary's Cathedral Basilica.Mar George Alencherry, Thakkala Diocese Bishop, was on Thursday elected as the new Major Archbishop of Syro-Malabar Church during a seven-day Syro-Malabar Church Bishops synod at St Thomas mount Kakkanad, the church headquarters.
The announcement was also made simultaneously at Vatican city in Rome and Kochi.
The post fell vacant following the death of Cardinal Mar Varkey Vithayathil on April one.
