Malayalam not to be made first language this year: Abdurab

Thiruvananthapuram: Education minister P K Abdurab said that Malayalam wouldn't be made the first language from this academic year. He was speaking to mediapersons after having discussion with higher officials of the public education department. He said there exists difficulty in sorting out periods. There is no clarity on the extra periods to be granted for the language. IT period can't be granted to Malayalam. With the implementation of the right to education act next year, it would be a 6-day week for classes and Malayalam could be considered then. He said a final decision would be taken after having discussions with the CM.

Though a final decision could not be reached this year, it is clear that Malayalam won't be made the main language from the beginning of this academic year. When asked about implementing Malayalam in CBSE schools in the middle of an academic year, the minister said that if the order comes, that would be applicable to them also.

The order to make Malayalam compulsory first language was taken during the LDF government. The responsibility to find out more periods rested with the public education director. But there was no clarity on all these. There are many private central syllabus schools, which had not prepared anything to implement the language. The number of teachers too has to be raised.
