Latest News from India - Decision on opening of Vault B on July 8

Thiruvananthapuram : Decision on opening of vault B of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple will be taken after a meeting of the seven-member panel appointed by the Supreme Court and top officials of the government here on July 8.

Temple sources said the panel had completed the inventoring of vault E which was opened this afternoon. However, the exact value of the treasure troves received from the vault was not known immediately. The inventoring of vaults A, C, D and F had already been completed. The temple emerged as one of the richest Hindu temples in the world after recovery of a treasure trove of gold, diamonds and precious stones, unofficially estimated at Rs 1,00,000 crore.

Following the discovery of hidden wealth, the state government had tightened the security of the temple by deploying two platoons of armed police personnel around the temple.

Six cellars of the Temple, which was being run by a trust of the royal family of earstwhile Travancore, are being opened one by one, as per a recent Supreme Court order.

The inspection at the temple began after Supreme Court appointed a seven-member panel to enter and assess the value of the objects stored in its cellars. A local lawyer had filed a petition saying that the current controllers were incapable of protecting the wealth.
