Palakkad: Palakkad district panchayath bagged this years `Bharatratna Rajeev Gandhi award' for the best district panchayath is the country. The district was selected considering its best performance in development and service sector.The award was instituted by Academy of Grass Roots Studies and Research of India working centering Thirupathi and presided by Lok Sabha former secretary general Dr Subhash Kashyap. The Meenvallum small-scale hydroelectric project is the first of its kind being implemented by a district panchayath in the country.
The intervention by the panchayath in raising the pass percentage in SSLC examination was also noticeable. The pass percentage, which was at 44.7% in 2005, is at 86 % during 2010.
