Kozhikode: The Crime branch has found that the malfunctioning of floodlight during the football match held last year at the Kozhikode Corporation stadium was not due to the presence of nail as reported earlier. The distribution board and cable board of the control panel of the malfunctioned floodlight was found to be stuck by a nail cutting the main cables. The Crime branch has found that the light went off due to low quality materials used in making the floodlight. That can be ensured only after getting the examination results of materials which had been sent for scientific examination at the forensic science laboratory in Thiruvananthapuram. The crime branch OCW section has ruled out any sabotage attempt. After getting the examination report, the crime branch would submit the investigation report in the court.
The floodlight went off during a match between Viva Kerala and Air India on January 28, 2010. Spectators at the stadium had shown their ire in the commotion that followed. The next day mayor M Bhaskaran in a press meet said that a nail was found in the cables in control panel board of the floodlight. The Corporation also gave a complaint to the home ministry stating that nailing led to the malfunctioning of lights and in September 2010 crime branch took over the case from Kasaba police.
The major findings of the probe are that a short circuit occurred inside the distribution board. The nail was found in the cable going outside the board. When the board itself is not working, power would be cut off from the cables. So the claim that nail caused the issue is false. On the day of the incident when officials checked the cables, no nail was found. The same was found on the second day in the examination held by co-coordinators of company, which had the contract of flood light and PWD, corporation engineers.
Crime branch stated that the nail was placed to divert the probe. Report also states that usage of low quality cables might have caused the issue.
