Latest News from India - Distribution of cancer treatment fund for children discontinues

Kozhikode: The continuing treatment fund for cancer affected children has been discontinued at the Kozhikode Medical College for the last three months. The medical aid fund as per cancer treatment project has to be given to patients up to 18 years old. As this was discontinued, parents are forced to buy expensive medicines to continue treatment. Each cancer affected child would need treatment costing Rs 3 lakh to Rs 4 lakh. As per the project, they would get Rs 50,000 in the initial phase and if needed future help too. With aid not being available, patients are buying medicines at a high price.

Rs 50,000 aid would be provided to all kids who come for cancer treatment. For the next level of fund, permission of the cancer security mission is needed. The recommendation of getting aid would be sent by the committee comprising doctors treating the child, head of radiology and hospital superintendent. Though the committees have recommended many children for this, there was no response for the last three months. The various committees have recommended aid for 167 children in women and children hospital and 33 in medical colleges.

Majority of medicines costs between Rs 200 and Rs 30,000. As medicines are costly, majority of the patients utilize the Rs 50,000 aid in the first level of treatment itself. Officials said they used to give an additional aid of up to Rs 30,000 even if the permission from commission is delayed for sometime.

Majority who are now getting treatment have crossed all these levels and are continuing treatment by selling their assets.
Relatives complained that the doctors are prescribing medicine from outside to all those who have crossed the first level. After the Thiruvananthauram Regional Cancer Center, Kozhikode medical college offers best treatment for cancer. So far Rs 60 lakh has been allotted since the implementation of the project in 2008.
