Latest News from India - Mumbai local trains stopped by rain in rush hour

Mumbai: It was a manic Monday for Mumbai commuters trying to get to office this morning. The Central line, which includes major stations like Byculla, Dadar, Ghatkoper and Thane, was closed by 9 am because water had accumulated on several tracks. On a normal weekday, about 35 to 40 lakh people use the Central line.

Also affected are big stations like Masjid, Kurla and Vashi on the Harbour line, which is part of the Central line. There is waterlogging on tracks at Byculla, Masjid, Matunga, Kurla and Sion and on the Harbour line at Masjid, Kurla, Wadala, Mankhurd, Govandi and Vashi.

Trains on the Western line, used by about 30 lakh people everyday, were running about 10 minutes late.

Rain has hit road traffic too and there are jams on the two main thoroughfares - the eastern and western express highways and in low-lying areas of central Mumbai.

    Airport operations are unaffected.

Mumbai has seen heavy rain for the past three days. Water-logging has been reported in areas like Dadar and Parel.
