Taking no chances with the security of the national Capital, Delhi Police was out on streets on Tuesday. Security apparatus in Delhi is already in readiness mode after the Delhi High Court blast. Police presence was further beefed up in the city following an e-mail that contained threat of a possible bomb blast in shopping malls.
Delhi Police has deployed over 20,000 men and officers on the streets for carrying out extensive searches on vehicles entering Delhi, identify and arresting suspicious characters and for conducting drills to allay fear among the people.
A senior Delhi Police official said that many steps have already been taken to keep the city secure after Delhi High Court blast, but additional measures were needed after the bomb threat. It was on September 13, 2008, Delhi had witnessed serial blasts. This was another reason to further beef up the security set up as it was the third anniversary of the blasts, the official said. Many media houses had received e-mails claiming responsibility for the Wednesday blast and also warned of a similar attack on shopping complexes on the anniversary of Delhi 2008 serial blasts.
Delhi Police officers said all the shopping malls, sensitive markets, all Metro stations, railway stations, airport and other vulnerable areas were accorded high priority. Cops could be seen checking malls and crowded places. Traffic Police was also out in large numbers to check vehicles at random and extra precaution was taken at the entry points of the Capital.
Major shopping malls and arcades remained empty owing to the extra security measures and heavy police presence. Fear was palpable as Delhiites exercised discretion and stayed away from crowded market places. Sarojini Nagar’s normal hustle and bustle was missing as the market wore a deserted look.
There was heavy police presence in busy market places such as Connaught Place, Sarojini Nagar, Karol Bagh, Chandni Chowk, Khan Market, South Extension and Greater Kailash areas. The Delhi Police have advised people to exercise a high degree of caution, monitor the surroundings and avoid visiting markets. Police have appealed to people to inform control room if they find any suspicious object, person or vehicle. “We are not going to slacken the guard as the threat perception still persists,” said a senior police officer. “The arrangements will be there till the bombers of the Delhi High Court are at large,” he added.
