Jolted by Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s growing popularity, the Congress leaders too started a parallel fast outside the Sabarmati Ashram, about six kilometres north of the University Convention Hall where Modi launched his ‘Sadbhavna Mission’.
The parallel fast is led by former Chief Minister Sankersinh Vaghela, a former BJP leader who was recently made the State convenor of the election camapaign committee of the State Congress.
A host of other leaders, including former Deputy Chief Minister Narhari Amin, former BJP Chief Minister Suresh Mehta, GPCC president Arun Modhwadia, Leader of Opposition Shaktisinh Gohil too joined him.
Vaghela said that Chief Minister Modi is misleading the people about the court verdict. He said that the Congress’ parallel fast here is against Modi regime’s land deals with industrialists, corruption and refusal to appoint a Lokayukta in the State. “If you are not corrupt, then why are you scared of appointing a Lokayukta ?,” asked Vaghela.
The big banner that formed the backdrop of the stage on the roadside had Vaghela’s photo alongside Mahatma Gandhi’s and also announced the agenda of the satyagraha as BJP government’s alleged arrogance, lies and corruption.
Also joining the Congress satyagraha was the father of Dipesh and Abhishek Vaghela, two students of a residential school of Asharam Bapu, who were mysteriously killed three years back.
Slain Minister Haren Pandya’s sister Chhaya too joined the Congress fast, alleging the Modi has not done justice to the bereaved family.
