A tiger admitted in the veterinary hospital at Nainital zoo mid-week died on Friday afternoon. A post-mortem will be conducted on Saturday.
The health of the ageing big cat had been critical, Manoj Shah, range officer, Nainital zoo, said. Its post-mortem could not be conducted on Friday due to non-availability of a second doctor. “There should a panel of two doctors as per guidelines”, Shah said.
The decreasing level of food intake observed since it came in contact with human beings on Monday was the major concern for doctors attending to it. “The tiger was about 12-year-old. Its teeth and claws had been damaged. It had around 22 injury marks on its body probably owing their origins to fights with other felines,” a doctor said.
Authorities had said it would take at least one week for the animal to display improvement which would, in turn, depend on its diet. “Only if it accepts proper diet will our treatment be effective,” an official had said.
