    Now, Maharashtra feels rattled!

Mild tremors measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale rocked Latur, Parbhani districts in Marathwada and other parts of neighbouring western Maharashtra on Monday morning, prompting hundreds of local residents to run out of their home in panic. On a day when the toll in the landslides triggered by Sunday's powerful earthquake rose substantially in Sikkim and other parts of north and north-east India, the Pune-based Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded the tremors at 6.22 am at latitude 18.8 degree north and longitude 76.8 degree east.

Apart from Latur and Parbhani, Osmanabad in Marathwada and Solapur in western Maharashtra also experienced mild tremors. However, there were no reports of any injury or loss to property from any of the affected areas.

As the State denizens were waking up to mild tremors, hundreds of people in the affected areas ran out of their homes, apprehending after-shocks, and settled down at nearby grounds or open places. It was only after half-an-hour that they returned to their homes. The anxiety of people in the affected areas, particularly Latur and Osmanabad districts, should be seen in the light of the fact that this belt is a seismic zone and the people are extremely tremor-sensitive.

A massive earthquake of the magnitude of 6.4 of the Richter scale, with its epicenter at Killari in Latur district, had rocked this belt on September 30, 1993, killing nearly people 10,000 people, injuring thousands of others and leaving a trail of destruction.
