While the Rajasthan Government has maintained that a total of eight people died in the Gopalgarh firing, local Congress MLA Zahida Khan on Monday said the toll was higher, as at least 10 persons of the community were untraceable even after six days of the incident.
She gave her version of the incident to a Congress team, sent by AICC, which on Monday visited Gopalgarh and other adjoining areas.
Zahida Khan, who claims to be an eyewitness of the incident, said police did open fire on the Muslims trapped in a mosque. The Congress team comprised Congress spokesman Rashid Alvi, Deepender Huda, Vijay Bahuguna and Viplav Thakur. The team was accompanied by Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee president, Chandrabhan and Ratan Singh, a Congress Lok Sabha member of the area.
A central BJP team, headed by its national spokesman Shahnawaz, will be arriving in Gopalgarh on Tuesday to probe the incident.
Though the situation is gradually improving, the district administration has not lifted the curfew in the areas of five police thanas, fearing retaliation. They were worried from the reports about a Meo Mahapanchayat, held at village Biwan, close to the Rajasthan border, in Haryana.
In another development, the relatives of the deceased refused to take the bodies as they wanted a post-mortem done by the doctors of AIIMS, Delhi. Their initial demand was that the post-mortem should be carried out by the doctors of SMS, Jaipur, but when a team of doctors from Jaipur began the examination at Bharatpur hospital on Sunday, relatives protested and demanded a doctors’ team from Delhi.
Meanwhile, Kavita Srivastav, who headed the team of People’s Union of Civil Liberties that visited the area, last week, released a fact finding report. The report said that police and the local Gujjars had joined hands to kill innocent people belonging to the other community. She also blamed the Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Prarishad and members of the RSS for inciting the local people against the Meo Muslims.
