The BJP on Thursday rejected the “comical” statement by Finance Minister Pranab Mukhrjee in the 2G spectrum row and said the issue was not one of settling bruised egos but of fixing responsibility for loss of “lakhs of crores” of revenue.
Reiterating its demand for then Finance Minister P Chidambaram’s resignation, the Opposition party insisted that it knew well that the Finance Ministry’s note of 2G, which exposed Chidambaram's misconduct, was "not only Mukherjee's baby" and that it had been prepared in consultation with the Ministries of Law, Finance and DoT besides the Cabinet and the PMO.
"The note goes on to establish that had the then Finance Minister P Chidambaram taken pre-emptive and precautionery steps the 2G scam could have been avoided and the loss of lakhs of crores averted," BJP spokesman Ravishankar Prasad said.
The BJP leader also pooh-poohed Chidambaram's remark that he accepted Mukherjee's statement. "Who is Chidambaram to accept Mukherjee's statement when there is mounting evidence against him? He should resign and his role should be investigated This is not an internal matter between the Congress ministers or settlement of their bruised inter-se egos. It concerns loot of public revenue and over-ruling of repeated advice of senior officers by Chidambaram to facilitate massive irregularities of then Telecom Minister A Raja," Prasad said.
