More new districts on cards for UP

After announcing three new districts on Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati may create another couple of districts during her visit to Jaunpur, Azamgarh and Varanasi on Friday.

Though officials of the revenue department are tightlipped, saying it was a sensitive issue, sources did not rule out the possibility of announcement of two districts — one each carved out from Azamgarh and Jaunpur.

According to sources, Jaunpur — considered to be one of the largest districts - may be bisected this time to create a new district having its headquarters at Shahganj, which is a tehsil at present.

With a radius of 10 km, Shahganj is adjacent to the districts of Faizabad, Sultanpur, Ambedkar Nagar and Azamgarh. It is believed that the proposed district might get a share of each of its neighbouring districts.

Sources said Azamgarh could also be divided to pave the way for creation of a new district with the present tehsil Lalganj as its headquarters. At present, Speaker Sukhdeo Rajbhar represents the Lalganj constituency in the Assembly.

It may be recalled that Azamgarh was divided by the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government in 1994 to carve out the Mau district. If Azamgarh is divided again, it will be the second district after Ghaziabad to undergo two divisions. It is also expected that the Chief Minister may announce creation of a new district from Saharanpur, with Deoband as its headquarters.
