The expiry of controversial resolution, seeking clemency for Parliament attack convict Muhammad Afzal Guru in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, triggered fresh politics in the embattled region with separatists joining the chorus.
On Thursday, legislator Sheikh Abdur Rashid, who moved the now-lapsed resolution in the Assembly staged protest demonstrations along with his supporters outside the Assembly complex. Separatist leaders Syed Ali Geelani and Yasin Malik alleged that New Delhi was pushing Kashmiris to the wall and by propelling Afzal Guru towards execution. Geelani announced peaceful protests on Friday against the Government’s approach towards Afzal Guru.
Police used batons to disperse Rashid and his supporters when they tried to force their entry into Assembly complex. During the action, the controversial legislator received minor injuries. He later staged a sit-in on the drop gate of Assembly and civil secretariat complexes.
Rashid described the police action as unjustified and an act of “state terrorism”. He alleged that the mainstream parties joined hands in State Assembly to fail his resolution on Afzal Guru. Meanwhile, JKLF chief Yasin Malik on Thursday warned that the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru could revive 1990-like militancy in the State.
