Pandemonium continued in the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly for the second consecutive day on Thursday. A group of Congress legislators sought expulsion of seven BJP members who stand suspended by their own party for their alleged involvement in cross-voting.

However, the Speaker insisted on a status quo over the issue as the expelled members had approached the high court.

While the Congress MLAs insisted on revealing names of the seven legislators, the BJP launched a counter-offensive, demanding to know the names of the Congress legislators involved in the infamous sex scandal of 2006.

Interestingly, Ghulam Ahmad Mir, who was jailed for six months for involvement in the sex scam, was leading the Congress group in protests. BJP members insisted that several Congressmen involved in the scandal were not arrested and their names not made public.

Congress legislators brought up the issue on Wednesday, disturbing functioning of the House and leading to repeated adjournments. However, the ruckus was construed to be related to the controversial resolution favouring clemency to Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

Mir said tainted BJP legislators had no moral right to show up in Assembly following expulsion from the party. “We want to know who these members are representing when their party has announced their expulsion,” Mir said. He added that the Congress wanted to know the names of the expelled BJP members. Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone later said the BJP high command has recommended expulsion of seven legislators, including former Minister of State for Defence Chaman Lal Gupta.

The expelled legislators allegedly indulged in cross-voting in the Legislative Council election during a previous Assembly session. They reportedly favoured the ruling National Conference in lieu of huge monetary benefits.

The BJP high command, acting on the prima facie evidence, expelled seven out of 11 legislators, who appealed to the high court.

Lone said, “Since the issue is sub judice, I am constrained to announce status quo till the verdict comes from the court on the issue. My action at the moment could influence or contradict the verdict that the court would give in due course of time while disposing of the case.”

Mir told mediapersons that people wanted to know the names of legislators who sold out the peoples’ mandate for petty monetary interests. He said such legislators should not be allowed to participate in the Assembly’s business as they have forfeited the right to represent their people by betraying their trust. He added that since the Speaker has now officially revealed their names, action is the only alternative.
