CAG’s revised estimates stir up controversy

A fresh controversy has erupted over Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai’s estimates of loss on the 2G spectrum sale as documents accessed through RTI has revealed that the CAG’s initial figure of loss was2,645 crore, but it was overruled and final figure of presumptive loss of1.76 lakh crore was given.

According to Director General Audit (Post and Telecommunications) RP Singh, the issue of Unified Access Service licenses and allotment of 2G spectrum caused a loss of2,645 crore, far lower than that final report figure.

Asked whether the Congress will seek action against Rai for this, Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that the Congress had never accepted the figure of1.76 lakh crore.

He said that the party’s stand is vindicated but there should be proper investigation as how the final figure of1.76 lakh crore was arrived at. The Joint Parliamentary Committee has already questioned the CAG’s loss figure seeking details of the calculation process.
