Does a young actress have the right to employ a secretary-manager to look after her schedules and financial affairs? No, thinks the Kerala Film Producers’ Association, which has now decided to impose a ban on South Indian actress Nitya Menon who had refused to meet some producers when she was at work on the sets of a movie and asked them to talk to her manager.
If the South Indian Film Chamber decides to endorse the decision of the Kerala producers, the 23-year-old successful actress who had won last year’s Nandi Award for Best Actress of the Andhra Pradesh Government would not be able to act in films anywhere in South India where she is a much-wanted artiste presently.
Association vice-president Kalliyur Sasi said Nitya had acted in ways unsuitable for a young and budding actress when producer Anto Joseph had gone to meet her on the sets of director TK Rajeev Kumar’s film, Thalsmayam Oru Penkutty, with the intention of signing her for an upcoming project.
“We think it is nothing but arrogance if such a young actress wants us to deal with her secretary or manager for signing her for a project. Even the most senior artistes do not do that. So we decided that we should not cooperate with her in future projects,” Sasi said, adding “We don’t discuss screenplays and remunerations with managers or secretaries.”
According to the association, the impertinence of the actress was intolerable as she had ‘insulted’ its top office-bearers. Anto Joseph was said to have been accompanied by association general secretary G Suresh Kumar and treasurer Sabu Cherian. A report quoted Suresh Kumar as saying that they had asked the South Indian Film Chamber to follow their line of action with regard to Nitya.
“If they pursue that path I won’t be having films anymore … for no mistake of mine,” said the actress, a much-admired star in the Tamil, Telugu and Kannada film industry. “I can’t understand the logic of banning me for employing a secretary. I have to have a manager as I can’t keep track of my schedules and remunerations by myself,” she said.
