Latest National News : Disillusioned with Pakistan, Karzai cosies up to New Delhi

With Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai set to review his strategy for making peace with the Taliban after his top peace negotiator Burhanuddin Rabbani was murdered, his visit to New Delhi assumes importance against the backdrop of souring Afghan-Pakistan relations.

On Sunday, a statement from Afghanistan’s presidential palace said, quoting investigators, evidence shows that Rabbani’s death last month “was plotted in Quetta and the person who carried out the suicide attack against Rabbani was a citizen of Pakistan”.

Karzai’s visit aims at strengthening ties with India at a time when disillusioned with Pakistan, Kabul is turning towards Indian support. New Delhi has all along reiterated its commitment for a stable Afghanistan.

Karzai will arrive in India from Tuesday on a two-day visit and is set to brief Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the peace and reconciliation efforts. He is likely to discuss the role of ISI’s links with the Haqqani network which has been blamed for the recent attacks on the US embassy in Kabul.

Karzai will also deliver a lecture on Wednesday on the future of Afghanistan and South Asia and the event will be presided over by External Affairs Minister SM Krishna.
