Latest National News : Mystery over Kerala teacher attack deepens

The mystery over the brutal attack on a teacher R Krishna Kumar of a school in Kerala’s Kollam district, managed by former UDF Minister R Balakrishna Pillai, deepened on Sunday with the police terming as contradictory several points mentioned by the injured teacher in his statement and media reports suggesting that the police could be wrong.

Though Pillai, who is undergoing a one-year prison term for corruption, is accused of having involvement in the incident as per public perception, the police are now examining the teacher’s alleged relationship with a woman in Nilamel, a place near Valakam, Kottarakkara, Kollam. The teacher belongs to Valakam, where the school is situated.

According to sources, the police are also examining the possibility of a terror angle to the attack on the teacher primarily because of the inhuman way in which it was carried out. The police, who had recorded the teacher’s statement on Saturday, have decided to repeat the exercise once again but a decision would be taken only after he regained consciousness fully.

At the same time, allegations have come up that the police are trying to divert the investigation in order to protect the actual culprits. According to KR Geetha, wife of the teacher, the police are acting suspiciously and malicious campaigns aimed at derailing the probe are going.

However, records of an interview with the teacher in hospital, telecast by a TV channel, showed him as saying that he had not told the police anything as he could not remember anything related to the attack. He said the police had asked him several questions but he had not replied to any of them.

Krishna Kumar was found in a critical condition at Valakam on the night of September 27 with injuries all over the body. Medical examinations showed that the assailants had pierced his rectum and small intestine using a thick and pointed iron rod. His genitals had been crushed and his hip bone had been fractured at several points.

Geetha, principal of the same school, had alleged that he had no enemies other than Balakrishna Pillai. She said Pillai used to threaten him for going to the court for getting the school principal’s job for her which she deserved due to her seniority. Pillai had wanted to give the job to one of his loyalists, she said.

The police had claimed that he had not gone to Kadakkal, some distance away from Valakam, on the day of the incident as per his statement but this reportedly contradicted what he had said while being taken to the hospital. Geetha and an astrologer whom he reportedly met that day had said that he had been to Kadakkal on that day.

The police, who focused on mobile coverage details for the teacher’s phone, have concluded that he had been to Nilamel, between Valakam and Kadakkal on the night of the incident. This also prompted them to look into his alleged relationship with a woman in Nilamel. However, the interview’s record showed him as saying that he had been to Kadakkal.

Though the police said Krishna Kumar had not mentioned the name of Pillai in connection with the incident, the CPI(M) leaders who met him in the hospital told newsmen that he had described his suspicions about the former Minister. They accused the police of carefully avoiding Pillai’s name during the questioning.

Meanwhile, State Congress president Ramesh Chennithala said on Sunday that the CPI(M) leaders were trying to divert the course of the police probe (by bringing up the Pillai factor). He said the Marxist leaders wanted to declare the culprits even before the investigations concluded.
