Latest National News : Committee set up to probe tigress killing in Chhattisgarh

A four-member committee of officers from various departments will begin a probe from Monday, into the killing of a tigress in Chhattisgarh Rajnandgaon on the Maharashtra border last week.

Sanjay Kumar of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), New Delhi, Chief Conservator of Forest (CCF) RK Kamata of Chhattisgarh, K Nag from Nagpur and Kawardha district-based wildlife expert Neha Samuel will be investigating the matter. “The team of investigators will visit the place on Monday,” sources said.

A mob of local villagers on September 24 killed a seven-foot, 250 kg tigress in the presence of forest officials, and even took out a ‘victory procession’ at Bakhrutola area, Rajnandgaon. Notably, the tigress could not be caught alive even though she kept on shuttling between Chhattisgarh and locations in Maharashtra for several days and had reportedly killed a woman.

Terming the incident “very serious”, Chief Minister Raman Singh held a high-level meeting on the matter. Terming the incident as “unfortunate and sad”, he ordered a probe by the NTCA into the killing. “Strict action will be taken after the probe report will come up,” sources said.
