Pitching for early reforms of the Security Council, the visiting Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, K Rahman Khan called on the president of the 66th UN General Assembly, Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser at his office in UN Headquarters on Thursday. Khan stressed that New Delhi seeks early reforms of the Security Council to reflect contemporary reality.
During the nearly half-an-hour long meeting, the two discussed a number of issues including Security Council reforms, a release issued by the Permanent Mission of India to the UN stated.
Welcoming Khan, Al-Nasser thanked India’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri and his Mission for supporting the office of the president of the General Assembly and his mission. Al-Nasser also said that he looked forward to continued Indian support.
“The president of the General Assembly assured that he would encourage the process of Security Council reform during his term,” the release said.
Keeping this in view, Al-Nasser informed that he had re-appointed Ambassador Zahir Tanin as Chairman of the inter-governmental Negotiations on ‘Security Council reforms’, it said.
Khan also invited Al-Nasser to visit India. Al-Nasser thanked Khan for his invitation and said that he would look forward to such a visit in February 2012.
