A division Bench of the Gujarat High Court observed on Friday that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Ishrat Jahan encounter killing has made substantial progress since IPS officer RR Verma has taken over as its chief.
“The probe has not only progressed but nearing its completion”, the High Court bench comprising Justices Jayant Patel and Abhilasha Kumari said after the SIT submitted its interim report on the June 15, 2004 encounter in which college girl Ishrat Jahan, her friend Javed and two other accomplices Amjad Ali and Zeeshan Johar were killed in an encounter with the police.
The Bench authorised the SIT to conduct psychological tests on the witnesses who have retracted their earlier statements and submit the final report by Nov 18 before the next hearing on November 21.
SIT chief RR Verma told the court that the Central Forensic Science Laboratory team would need to come again to recreate the encounter scene and conduct some more tests.
