Latest News from India - HC verdict on Gujarat Lokayukta row on Monday

A division Bench of the Gujarat High Court on Friday concluded its hearings on all petitions pertaining to the Governor’s controversial appointment of Lokayukta without consulting the Chief Minister and reserved its ruling till next week.

Complying with Wednesday’s order by the division Bench comprising Justices Akil Kureshi and Sonia Gokani, the State Government on Friday submitted a sealed cover containing the correspondence between Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Governor Kamla during the days before the latter’s unilateral appointment of the Lokayukta.

These correspondences related to the proposed Ordinance that sought to curtail the role of the Chief Justice of the high court from the process of finalising the names for the Lokayukta.

Senior counsel Girish Patel, advocate for petitioner Bhikhubhai Jethwa, said the State Government had claimed that the process of consultation was on with the Chief Justice but actually it was waiting for the Governor’s nod to the Ordinance that sought to minimise the Chief Justice’s role.

Patel had complained during the earlier hearing that the State Government had intentionally not submitted to the bench all the documents exchanged among the Governor, Chief Minister and the Chief Justice.

The high court Bench announced that it will start dictating its order in the open court on Monday.
