Dussehra celebrations at Ramlila ground turned tragic when a five-year-old girl was killed after a log of wood from the effigy of Kumbhakaran hit her on Thursday evening. The deceased, Bhavya Gupta, the only daughter of Varsha Gupta (29), was among a group of 10-12 persons who had come from Paharganj to participate in the Dussehra celebrations that is held here every year.
Mohini Gupta, Bhavya's aunt, said, “In the massive gathering, our group was broken up and Bhavya, Varsha and I were standing near the effigy of Kumbhkaran. We decided to leave before the ceremony concluded since Bhavya was feeling hungry”.
But as the trio started to make its way out, a log of wood from the enormous effigy broke off and hit Bhavya on her head. “No sooner than it hit her, she collapsed with heavy bleeding from her face,” Mohini said adding, “Bhavya did not speak after that.”
A fire tender parked inside the ground rushed the girl to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital where she was declared brought dead, a senior police official said. Her body was sent for a post-mortem examination.
Bhavya had also lost her father in a road accident in Amritsar when she was a year old. The mother-daughter duo used to live at Varsha's parent's residence in Paharganj.
