Kalpetta: The scientific world has added one more plant to the plant community from Wayanad. The plant, which belongs to Aero Colossus, was identified by researches in Kozhikode Malabar Botanical Garden by CP Vivek, MM Swapna and KK Suresh.
The plant was spotted at the arecanut plantation near Vivek's home in Kammana, Mananthvadi. The plant has been named Aero colossuses Wayanadans. The plant was discovered during a statewide study held by Vivek about water plants. Malabar botanical garden former MD Dr R Ansari has found 80 species of plants belonging to aero colossus family. The plant from Kammana did not belong to any of these species. The report on discovery of aero colossus Wayanadans has been mentioned in the international publication Readia of Indian Association or Angiosperm Taxonomy.
Usually this kid of plants grow in wet areas. Recently 10 kind of species are discovered from Wayanad, led by team Dr. MK Satheesh Narayanan, senior scientist of MS Swaminathan research centre.
