Thiruvananthapuram: As per the statistics given by the National Family health survey, Malayalee women are gaining weight and 34 % women suffer obesity. At the same time 22 % children are suffering due to loss of weight. The survey says that the reason behind this is more and more women are doing sedentary jobs in fields of IT, lack of exercise and hormone imbalance. Among men, 24.3 are obese.Low weight children ar at 29 % and those suffering with protein deficiency at 16%. Survey also finds that adolescence, especially girls, are getting less protein-rich foods.
Tribes, fishermen community and other poor people are also not getting sufficient protein-rich food. Among the obese, majority are middle-aged people. Kids between 6 to 35 months are also affected with anemia. Among the married women under the age of 49, 32.3 % are anaemic. Among the pregnant women, 33% are anaemic.
Excess protein is also posing problem among the rich. Food made in excess oil, packet food, chocolate and soft drinks are making kids obsese. Only 55.4% of children in Kerala get breast milk within an hour of delivery. 12.5% women are malnourished and among men this is 11.9%.
