    Latest News from India - State authority to be formed for environmental clearance

    New Delhi: The Union ministry of Forest and Environment has approved setting up of a special authority in the state to give environment clearance for developmental activities in the state. The union minister approved the request of the team of ministers when they visited Delhi recently. The notification on this would be issued after completing the proceedings of the union law ministry.With the implementation of such an authority, the state would be able to provide environmental clearance for state-related developmental and industrial projects.

    At present the state must await central permission for each and every activity.

    Kerala had submitted a direction to set up a state level authority to study environmental effects and an expert committee to evaluate the effects. The authority would have three members, including a chairman, for a three-year term. Kerala also submitted its direction to appoint former secretary of the union ocean developmental department Dr AE Muthunayagam as chairman, director of environmental - meteorological, weather surveillance department as member secretary and Dr KP Joy of MG university syndicate member as member in the authority.

    Kerala CM had also submitted the list of 16-member expert committee when he visited Delhi along with other ministers and discussed the same with environmental minister Jayanthi Natarajan.

    The central notification categorises the central projects wanting permission as A and state projects as B. As per the centre, each new project must gain environmental permission. As per the recommendation of expert committee, the authority would decide whether to approve the project or not.
