Workers begin vacating plant following HC order

A day after the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the district administration to have Maruti Suzuki India Ltd's Manesar plant premises vacated, thousands of protesting workers began to walk out from the plant on Friday evening. The workers would, however, continue their strike outside the plant.

The workers began to vacate all three Manesar-based Maruti plants after SS Deshwal, Gurgaon police commissioner, accompanied with other senior district officials, interacted with them on Friday morning. At around 8 pm, the workers began to move out of the plants on the eighth day of the strike. Though Deshwal assured the strike would come to an end soon, there were no signs of a compromise from either of the sides.

Production in the Manesar plants, however, remained halted as the striking workers began to vacate premises of all three plants — Suzuki motor cycles India limited, Maruti Suzuki India Limited and Suzuki Power Train.

“Around 400 police personnel were deployed inside the plant by the district administration after the Hissar by-poll voting concluded and heavily armed cops assembled in large numbers outside the Manesar police station as well .Top cops were also present. This was done to prevent any violent outbreak. If the workers refused to vacate the plants, the district administration might have taken the help of paramilitary forces to evict the agitating workers from the premises” a senior police official said.

According to Gurgaon commissioner of police, SS Deshwal, “The union leaders and workers have been convinced that they could strike 100 metres away from the plant premises and will respect the honorable Court orders. While the workers said “the company administration is not ready to talk with the striking workers and is maintaining a pressure tactic on workers”.

District administration had earlier earmarked the open ground behind Raheja square in sector-2 A of IMT, Manesar where the striking employees could peacefully continue staging dharnas and demonstration.
