Hazare begins vow of silence Sunday

Anna Hazare will go on a 'maun vrat' - vow of silence - from Sunday for an indefinite period due to medical reasons, an aide said.
"He will not speak or communicate with anybody for an indefinite period on health grounds," the aide told reporters here Saturday.

During his 'maun vrat', the 74-year-old Hazare will not travel outside Ralegan-Siddhi. He has also postponed his five-state tour till after the winter session of parliament, usually held November-December.

It is not known when Hazare will travel to Pakistan. He had announced the plans for the visit last month.

Hazare's 'maun vrat' comes barely three days after the attack on his aide and Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan. He was assaulted in his Supreme Court chamber in Delhi for his remarks advocating referendum in Kashmir.

Another Hazare aide, Arvind Kejriwal, claimed that the anti-corruption crusaders were getting threats through phone calls and SMSes.

Kejriwal termed the fresh threats as a "part of a conspiracy" to derail the anti-corruption movement.

Will Team Anna members too go silent, asks Congress

New Delhi: Congress Saturday declined to comment on activist Anna Hazare's decision to go on "maun vrat (vow of silence)" from Sunday but asked if other members of his team also will follow suit.

"There is no need to comment. But people can ask if it (silence) will also apply to other members of Team Anna," Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said.

He said there could be questions on the purpose of Hazare's decision to go into the silent mode and how long will it last.

An aide of Hazare told reporters in his Ralegan-Siddhi village in Maharashtra that the social activist will go on a "maun vrat" from Sunday for an indefinite period due to medical reasons. What those "medical reasons" are was not explained.
