Thiruvananthapuram: The state is gearing up for another power crisis with the decline in power supply from outside sources. Many states, including Maharashtra from which Kerala buys electricity, has issued an order - not to supply electricity. When the withdrawal of load shedding was announced the previous Wednesday, there was a situation when the state used to get 525-megawatt electricity from electricity merchants and power exchange. But on Monday, the state got only 217 megawatt from them. From the central pool, the state is getting 750-780 megawatt per day. The board decided to withdraw load shedding on assumption that if they buy 400-45- megawatt per day, it can solve the problems. After load shedding was withdrawn, the electricity supply from power merchants which was at 250 megawatt declined to 100 now. The electricity from power exchange, which was at 275 megawatt, also declined to 117 megawatt. The increase in usage of electricity is also putting the board in a dilemma.
Presently, the average monthly use of electricity is 53-54 million units and the board expects 49.5 million units for October. The board feels that 2900 mw would be the maximum need during peak hours. But, these days the consumption is more than 3000 megawatt. In such a situation the board is planning to re-launch energy conversation awareness programmes.
