Manoj Bakkarwala the most notorious criminal and auto-lifter active in the national Capital and in the neighbouring States managed to wriggle out of Delhi Police dragnet once again after being surrounded by a crack team of Crime Branch on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.
Bakkarwala is on Delhi Police’s list of top 10 of most wanted and sleuths of Crime Branch have been tasked to nail him. Escaping police dragnet is not new for Bakkarwala as he had dodged Haryana Police too. It was on June 20 this year and since then Delhi Police is involved in a cat and mouse game with him.
DCP, Crime Ashok Chand said Bakkarwala hit a Sub-Inspector with his car and then opened fire in his bid to escape. The daring escape took place near Delhi Secretariat in Central Delhi’s Indraprastha Estate at around 1 am on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. There was specific information with the Anti Extortion unit of the Crime Branch about Bakkarwala’s movement and the sleuths had managed to track down his i20 car.
A team headed by Inspector Suresh were in hot pursuit. His car was seen moving near Karkari More in East Delhi and the police team started tailing him. He was already accompanied by a person who was perched on the bucket seat. He picked up two more and headed towards Vikas Marg. Bakkarwala crossed the Yamuna bridge and turned towards Delhi Secretariat by taking the loop. It was here the Crime Branch team over took his car.
Bakkawala who was accompanied by three other unidentified persons was quick to size up the situation as he reversed his car and hit Sub-Inspector Sanjeev who had jumped out of his vehicle to nab him. Chand said, Bakkarwala was cornered from three sides but one side was still uncovered. It was dark and he took advantage of it. Having been cornered he fired two shots while the police team too retaliated. Police team fired four rounds in an attempt to subdue him. He however managed to escape taking advantage of darkness.
Police teams have been detailed to get him and the effort to bring to book will continue, the DCP added. SI Sanjeev who tried to puncture the tyres of Bakkarwala’s car by firing was injured. He fell on the ground after being hit by Bakkarwala’s car. He has sustained fracture in his hand and injuries in the abdomen but is safe. He has been discharged from the hospital.
“Manoj Bakkarwala (36) who belongs to Delhi’s Bakkarwala village in Outer Delhi is a hardened criminal.
Bracketed as the most notorious auto-lifter who runs his gangs in Delhi, Haryana and Punjab, he is involved in around 500 cases of vehicle thefts and other criminal activities. He was arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police on July 15, 2009 and was jailed. Special cell had arrested him after he was found disposing stolen cars in Chandigarh and Haryana. He did a Houdini when he escaped from the custody of Haryana Police when a police party was escorting him to Bhondsi jail in Gurgaon from South Delhi’s Saket court. It was on June 20 last he hoodwinked the police and has been on the run since then,’’ said an official.
Delhi Police Commissioner BK Gupta on Monday announced a cash reward of50,000 to any one who could provide information of the notorious vehicle thief. As a matter of record, Bakkarwala has managed to escape from police custody on other occasions too and has been a thorn in Delhi Police’s flesh, a senior police official added.
