Distribution of free bicycles to school boys and girls will promote primary education and help the students come over the problem of distant travel to reach their schools, said Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik while inaugurating the Government's pet scheme at the Gajapati Stadium at Parlakhemundi on Friday.
Immediately after alighting at the helipad at the Raserve Police Ground, Patnaik garlanded the statues of late Parla Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati and Biju Patnaik. It was followed by inauguration of the SC and ST hostel building constructed at a cost of Rs 35 lakh provided by the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) .
Launching the bicycle scheme at a solemn but well-attended function over-crowded by primary students and parents, the Chief Minister justified choice of the State-level venue to launch the scheme, saying that Parlakhemundi was a sacred land for all Odia people as the area once occupied a top position in the field of education and culture and the late Parla Maharaja was one among the front-ranking pioneers who successfully led a persistent struggle to see a separate Odisha State on the basis of language.
Patnaik said the Government had an outlay of Rs 75.40 crore for the current year under the scheme, which will benefit 2, 88, 835 school-going boys and girls.
He distributed Account Payee cheques to the students and said utmost care was taken to make the process transparent as the students would receive the cost of a cycle directly from the school managing committee under direct supervision of the headmaster.
He said the scheme would go a long way in creating interest among the parents and the children for education. It would also encourage, in particular, girls' education in the poorer communities, the Chief Minister added.
Present among others on the podium were Berhampur MP Siddhant Mohapatra, Parla MLA K Narayan Rao, Mass Education Secretary Aparajita Sarangi, Director Srikant Prusty, Gajapati Collector Rabindra Pratap Singh and DRDA Project Director Jamini Sarangi.
