Panchayati Raj Minister Maheswar Mohanty on Friday ordered an administrative inquiry by the Collector of Ganjam district into the alleged suicide of a Gram Sathi at Kainthpali village under Rangelunda block in the district on the day.
The Collector has been asked to submit his report within 24 hours, said Mohanty.
The Gram Sathi ended his life for alleged non-payment of his monthly remuneration for the last six months by the concerned BDO.
The Gram Sachis are engaged by the Government as per the Central guidelines to oversee the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MGNREG) scheme.
According to reports from Berhampur, the Gram Sathi, Shivram Nayak, who is also a contractor, committed suicide alleging non-payment of his bill by the block authorities.
He had written a suicidal note, which was recovered, in which he alleged that the block authorities were responsible for his death. He hanged himself with the help of a rope.
