UPA scams are not just ally issues: Advani

Senior BJP leader LK Advani on Saturday charged the Congress-led Central Government of trying to make UPA partners scapegoats in corruption, for which “the Government as a whole is responsible”. He also said his party was against revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Jammu & Kashmir.

“Coalition may impose restrictions as far as policy matters are concerned but not in terms of integrity,” Advani told the media in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday. The BJP leader was in Kerala as part of his Jan Chetna Yatra. Advani addressed five public meetings in Kerala on Saturday.

When the UPA’s scams broke out, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had spoken of compulsions of coalition dharma, Advani pointed out. The Congress would not be able to escape the burden of the scams by making alliance partners scapegoats when the responsibility was on the entire Government, he added.

“There are bound to be coalitions. If elections take place in 2014 or earlier, a coalition Government will come to power,” said Advani, adding that the BJP would be careful in selecting partners.

Stating that the country was in a state of drift presently, the BJP leader said, “A series of scams, scandals and massive corruption have become the defining feature of the Government headed by Manmohan Singh. There is complete loss of face, indecision and lack of credibility.”

Soaring inflation, he said, was continuing to rub salt on the wounds of the common man. “Corruption only fuels inflation and causes further price rise. Inflation is there because of gross mismanagement of food economy and rampant corruption in the affairs of the UPA,” Advani said.

Asked about the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, Advani said the question had been addressed “squarely” and added, “When elections come, we will declare what we want to.”

He said public support for the Jan Chetna Yatra had surpassed all expectations “of my own party and adversaries also”.

Opposing the move to dilute the RTI Act, Advani said the Prime Minister’s talk could be due to differences between some of his Ministers, giving the impression of a “civil war” within the Government.

Advani also said his party was against revocation of the AFSPA in Jammu & Kashmir. “Our stand is that the contribution made by the Army in J&K should be remembered always. Nothing should be done to weaken the position of the armed forces there.”

Referring to Thursday’s incident of recovery of a bomb from his yatra route near Madurai, Advani said, “Tamil Nadu Police should be complimented for recovery of the bomb and advising our people to change the route.”
