A court in Thrissur, Kerala on Monday convicted Tamil Nadu native Govindachamy (30) in the case pertaining to the brutal rape and murder of Soumya (23) from Shoranur, Palakkad during a train journey in February last. Govindachamy had raped and attacked Soumya after pushing her out of a slow-running train. Quantum of punishment is likely to be pronounced on Friday.
Fast Track Court Judge Raveendra Babu found Govindachamy, guilty on 15 counts including murder, rape, inflicting injuries leading to death, burglary and trespassing into ladies’ compartment in a train. Govindachamy was the only accused in the case which had sparked State-wide discussions about on-train security of woman passengers.
After listening to the judgement read out in Tamil, Govindachamy denied the charges. He claimed that he had never committed any such crime. His counsel said he had never been punished by any court earlier.
The court will examine two witnesses from Chennai on Friday to get clarity on this point before announcing the punishment.
