A four-year-old boy whom his mother lost in a market in North West Delhi on Sunday evening was found slaughtered to death on Monday. The minor, identified as Mohammad Afridi, had gone missing on Sunday evening after he was separated from his mother in Tota Ram Market under the jurisdiction of Keshav Puram police station. The family alleged that the local police did not file any FIR until the body was found.
Mohammad Afridi was one of three children of Mohammad Chand (30) and Rubaida Khatun (28). Rubaida had taken Afridi along with her to Totaram Market to purchase household commodities on Sunday evening.
An inconsolable Rubaida said, “While buying vegetable, I lost track of my son. I searched for him everywhere by calling his name. But, he was not found.” The family kept on searching for the missing child throughout the night. He was finally spotted lying dead in a MCD park, located barely 300 metres from his house. The incident came to light when a woman spotted a child lying in a pool of blood inside the park.
Police rushed Mohammad to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead. The body was handed over to the family after post-mortem examination was conducted at Babu Jag Jeevan Ram Hospital. Police suspect personal enmity could be the reason behind the murder. Few days ago, a quarrel had taken place between Chand and a neighbour over a trivial issue.
Meenu Choudhary, Deputy Commissioner of Police, north-west, said, “Apparently, the child’s throat was slit and there were bruises on the left hand. The reason behind the murder is yet to be found out.”
Chand said, “Had police launched a manhunt, my son might have been alive today. At first, we went to Shanti Nagar police chowki. They did not file any FIR on our complaint. We were asked to go to Inder Lok chowki. We went there, but there was no help. Late night, we also went to Keshav Puram police station with the complaint. By then, we had lost hope of any help from police.”
On allegations of police negligence, Choudhary said, “A probe has been ordered on the complaint filed by the father of the deceased child. Departmental action would be taken if any official is found guilty in this connection.”
Mukhtiar Singh, supervisor of the MCD Park, locally known as Tankiwala Park, said, “A woman, who had come for a morning walk, informed me about the child’s body. I was aghast to see the gruesome sight. A child was lying on the ground. His throat was slit. The child was wearing a half pant and a half shirt. His sleepers were lying beside him.”
In 2010, another murder had taken at this MCD park at Rampura. “In 2010, a guard named Kanwaldhari was found murdered in the park. After that incident, no other guard came forward for night duty. The park remains abandoned during nights and is largely occupied by anti-social elements,” Hansraj, a gardener, said. Hansraj claimed to be working at the park for around 20 years.
