Work on Central Secretariat-Kashmere Gate corridor starts

The preparatory work on the Central Secretariat to Kashmere Gate corridor kick started on Monday. The track system followed for the corridor is the Standard Gauge system (as in the Inderlok to Mundaka and Airport Express lines), which is the most internationally preferred gauge for the metro trains. The completely underground corridor is an extension of the Badarpur to Central secretariat line to Kashmere Gate and will have seven stations - Janpath, Mandi House, ITO, Delhi Gate, Jama Masjid, Lal Quila and Kashmere Gate.

A Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) spokesperson said, “The technique employed for the construction of all the stations of the corridor is the cut and cover technique, in which the soil is excavated and hen the dug up area is covered. This will be done using the German based Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). Though the preparatory work on the corridor has been started, it will take another ten days for the civil construction to be visible at Janpath.”

The spokesperson added, “To herald the TBMs a shaft will be created at the Chelmsford Club and another shaft will be created at Janpath for their retrieval. To ascertain the area to be covered at Janpath, a station box will be created. Since the corridor will connect to the two historical monuments - Jama masjid and Red Fort - the look of the stations will be a healthy mix of the contemporary and old with use of stainless steel and traditional stones used in Jama Masjid and Red Fort.”

Though the work is on full swing at Janpath, the dates have not been finalised for starting of work at the other stations of the corridor. The corridor will develop Mandi House as an interchanging station, thereby easing the crowds at the Rajiv Chowk station. This 9.37 kms corridor when completed will connect old Delhi areas such as Daryaganj, Delhi Gate and Red Fort with the business hub of Delhi at Janpath.
