Saif Ali Khan ‘anointed’ 10th Nawab of Pataudi

Son of former Indian cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was ‘anointed’ the 10th Nawab of Pataudi, inheriting his late father’s title and legacy. After the 40-day mourning for late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi was over, the official symbolic ‘coronation’ ceremony took place at Pataudi House in Gurgaon on Monday.

Saif’s sister Saba was made the patron of the body that manages religious and charitable endowments of the erstwhile princely state. Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda was also present at the ceremony.

Saba revealed that “heads of 52 villages wanted to organise a symbolic coronation ceremony, in which a headgear (turban) would be tied around Saif’s head as a mark of respect”.

The 41-year-old actor was made the Nawab at the pagdi ceremony at the Ibrahim palace where heads of villages tied white turban around his head in the presence of his mother Sharmila Tagore, sisters Saba and Soha. However, titles like Nawab or Maharaja are no longer recognised by the Indian Government. Pataudi has been ruled by Saif’s forefathers since the early 19th century.

While paying tributes to late Mansoor Ali Pataudi, Bhupinder Singh Hooda said, “Nawab Pataudi was a fine person and a renowned cricketer. Though he was born in Bhopal and received his education in Dehradun and London, he never forgot Pataudi. He wrote ‘Pataudi’ with his name as suffix.”

“Nawab Pataudi was honoured with Arjun Award in 1964 and ‘Padmashree” in 1967. Nobody thought that he would leave us so soon. His death is a big loss to the sports world. I am hoping that his son Saif would also bring laurels and name to Pataudi and to his family as well,” he added.

Later on the occasion, Hooda prayed for peace to the departed soul of Nawab Pataudi. Minister of State for Sports Sukhbir Singh Kataria, MLA Rao Dharampal and Aftab Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner PC Meena, newly-appointed police chief of Gurgaon KK Sandh and DCP (east) Maheshwar Dayal were also present, along with other senior officials of District Adminstration.

Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi who breathed his last on September 22 in Delhi after fighting a chronic lung infection, was the last Nawab of the Pataudi Riyasat from 1952 to 1971. Pataudi, whose mother was the daughter of Nawab of Bhopal Hamidullah Khan, was born in Bhopal and was the Mutawalli (Patron) of the Augaf-e-Shahi.
