Maya hikes cane SAP by Rs 40 per quintal
In order to please the cane farmers ahead of upcoming Assembly poll, Uttar Pradesh government announced a hike of Rs 40 per quintal in cane’s State Advisory Price (SAP) for the current crushing season.
The state cabinet which met here on Tuesday approved the proposal. “The BSP is, in a true sense, pro-farmers and, therefore, has announced a hike of Rs 40 per quintal in the cane SAP which is much more than the price announced by the neighbouring Punjab and the Union Government,” Chief Minister Mayawati said while talking to media persons after cabinet meeting here on Tuesday. The UP cane growers would now get Rs 250 per quintal for early varieties, Rs 240 per quintal for common varieties, and Rs 235 per quintal for the other varieties of sugar cane.
All the private sugar mills were asked to start crushing within next three days otherwise action would be taken against them, she said.
The Chief Minister added that the UP government was forced to announce such a hike to protect the interest of the farmers after the Centre announced Fair Remunerated Price (FRP) of Rs 145 per quintal of cane “which is too low”.
Last year also, the state government had hiked the FRP of sugarcane by Rs 40 per quintal. Over four million cane farmers would be benefited with this hike, claimed the Chief Minister. Mayawati said her government was committed to the welfare of farmers.
“This is evident from the fact that the SAP has doubled in the present BSP regime. In 2007, when the BSP government came to power, the cane price was Rs 125 per quintal and now it is Rs 250,” she said adding that in Punjab, the cane farmers were getting between Rs 220 and Rs 230 per quintal.
Taking a dig at Congress-led UPA Government, the Chief Minister said that the Centre was anti-farmer and “therefore, has kept the FRP at Rs 145 per quintal.”
The hike of cane prices in the state would, however, not make the opposition parties and the farmers organisations happy as they had been demanding Rs 300 per quintal.
