Give civic poll notification by today: HC

Turning down the appeal of the Uttar Pradesh Government, seeking more time for holding urban local bodies' elections, the Allahabad High Court on Tuesday directed it and the State Election Commission (SEC) to issue notification by Wednesday.

Passing this order on a modification application filed for revision of its earlier order passed on October 19, a division Bench comprising Justices Amitav Lala and VK Mathur directed the SEC to ensure the entire election process is completed within six weeks.

Further, the court directed the local bodies' elections be held, as far as practical, as per Census-2011 but if not possible, on the basis of data of Census-2001.

The census department of Government of India had also moved its application, stating that making the 2011 Census data available to Uttar Pradesh was not possible as the process was still not complete.
