5-day-old tiger cubs die in Nandankanan
Five tiger cubs born only on Thursday to tigress Priyanka mysteriously died simultaneously in the tiger enclosure at the Nandankanan Zoo on Friday, sending shock waves among wildlife lovers of the State as the deaths came close on the hills of the sad demise of Tanuja, a white tigress, only a day back.
Autopsy reports said the cubs had no food content in their stomachs. “Inquiry will be conducted into the sudden and simultaneous death of the cubs,” said a senior zoo official.
Wildlife experts maintained that when a mother tigress becomes aware that somebody has come in contact of the cubs at the time of birth or in the immediate aftermath, the mother either kills the cubs or leaves them forlorn in which case the cubs have no other option but to embrace slow death.
