Chandy writes to Munda
The murder of tribal activist sister Valsa John has caught national as well international attention with Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy sending missives to his Jharkhand counterpart Chief Minister Arjun Munda and international body Amnesty International demanding Indian Government a fair probe.
“Whoever is responsible must be brought before law,” Chandy was quoted saying this after he visited relatives of the slain nun at Vazhakkala in Ernakulam district on Saturday.
Amnesty International in a missive sent to the Government of India has urged a thorough an investigation into the killing of Valsa. “Valsa John appears to have been murdered in connection with her human rights work,” said Sam Zarifi, Amnesty International’s Asia-Pacific director.
Assuring throughout investigation State Home Secretary JB Tubid said that the investigation is moving in the right direction. “We have collected some vital details and the case will be busted very soon,” Tubid said.
Meanwhile, the police arrested one Lakhiram Murmu, on Saturday, from Pachuara village under suspicion. “The police detained a person for interrogation too,” IG Santhal Pargana; Arun Oraon told The Pioneer. With this the number of people arrested on the ground of suspicion has rose to eight. These seven suspects were close associates of Valsa who later on turned against tribal activist and took part in a road block on November 8 demanding her eviction from Pachuara village.”We have recovered the mobile of Valsa and have asked the service provide to provide details of the calls”
Valsa was fighting for justice for a rape victim. The police are investigating, whether the culprits involved in the rape case conspired to kill her. Media report cited that on Tuesday night when a group of 30-40 assailants attacked to eliminate her at her residence at Pachuara village the rape victim was too along with her who managed to flee though.
