Defence deal case: No SC relief for Bangaru Laxman
The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition filed by former BJP chief Bangaru Laxman, who sought quashing of criminal proceedings against him in the “fictitious” defence deal case on the ground that his former personal secretary, also a co-accused, was allowed by the investigating agency to turn an approver.

A bench of Justices AK Ganguly and Gyan Sudha Mishra dismissed the 72-year-old politician’s plea who found fault with trial court action to grant pardon to his former secretary T Satyamurthy by accepting CBI’s plea to make him an approver. Laxman was accused of receiving `1 lakh bribe from undercover journalists who posed as arms dealers in a sting operation to expose corruption in arms deals.

The court declined to entertain the petition but clarified that the decision will not affect the merits of the case pending trial before the lower court.

The CBI case against Laxman is for receiving illegal gratification under Prevention of Corruption Act as the CD containing the sting operation shown by a news portal clearly showed Laxman receiving the bribe amount for recommending the Defence Ministry on purchase of defence equipment for the Army.
