Rare 53% turnout in South Kolkata

In a development most uncharacteristic of Bengal, far lesser number of voters turned out to exercise their franchise in the Kolkata South Lok Sabha by-elections.

The constituency that was vacated following resignation of sitting MP Mamata Banerjee, who entered the Assembly from Bhawanipore seat, went to bypolls on Wednesday.

The contest is between Trinamool’s Subrata Bakshi, Minister in Banerjee’s Cabinet, and Ritabrata Banerjee of CPM, who is also all-India secretary of SFI. “Though results would be a foregone conclusion (with Trinamool winning) we want to look at the victory margin,” a senior Trinamool leader said. Last time, Mamata won by a margin of 2.2 lakh votes.
