FIR against Bareilly sugar mill for delay in crushing

FIR against Bareilly sugar mill for delay in crushing

Following the instruction of Chief Minister for running all private sugar mills in State, action has been initiated against sugar mills deliberately delaying crushing session. The first FIR in this regard was lodged against a private sugar mill in Bareilly district on Tuesday.

Under sections 420, 421, 466, 120 and 120 B of IPC a FIR was lodged against Nawabganj sugar mill in Bareilly which had announced start of crushing much earlier but was not accepting cane from farmers for crushing, the sources at cane development department (CDD) on Thursday said.

According to sources, the functionaries of this private sugar mill had announced start of crushing just after declaration of state advisory price (SAP) but it was just an eye wash as no preparations for crushing were being seen inside the mill.

This amounted to fraud and cheating the farmers who, under pressure of getting fields empty for Rabi sowing, were doing rounds of the mill as they could be allowed to supply the cane crop.

Now state government has instructed district magistrates to hold meetings with sugar mill functionaries and warn them if crushing was further delayed stern action would be taken against them. The instructions has been sent to district cane officers to give actual report regarding the preparations of crushing in the sugar mills which were yet to comply with government order.

While declaring SAP for ongoing year about two weeks ago UP Chief Minister Mayawati had instructed private sugar mills to start crushing in next three days.

However out of total 125 mills in state 93, including 12 co-operative sector mills, had started crushing by Wednesday.

Private sugar mills which were yet to start the crushing were complaining about low sugar recovery percentage in present which could add to the production cost of the sugar. Currently, average sugar recovery percentage was around 7.85 percent which was expected increasing with drop in temperature in December.

However terming the current sugar recovery percentage as satisfactory a CDD official said, with crushing about 400 lakh quintol of cane so far 31 lakh ton sugar have been produced. Meanwhile, cases against eight private mills have been lodged for less weighing and not being transparent in dealings with farmers.
