    Shutters down in Maharashtra

    Shutters down in Maharashtra
Petty shopkeepers, small-scale merchants and wholesalers in Mumbai and elsewhere in Maharashtra downed their shutters on Thursday in response to a nation-wide bandh in protest of the Centre’s decision to allow 51 per cent FDI in multi-brand retail trade.

"The bandh was a success not just in Mumbai but in entire Maharashtra. More than one lakh small traders, retailers and whole-sale dealers in Mumbai and Thane participated. The closure resulted in a loss of Rs 500 crore," said Viren Shah, chief of Federation of Retail Traders' Welfare Association.

Federation of Associations of Maharashtra president Mohan Gurnani said the bandh elicited "very good response" from small and medium traders. "Major markets of grain, fruits and vegetables and kirana have observed bandh today," he said. The call got equal enthusiastic response in Nagpur, Pune, Aurangabad, Nashik and Amravati.

On a day when APMC vegetable, fruit, sugar and foodgrain wholesale markets at Vashi in Navi Mumbai remained closed, the oil and cloth markets were also closed for the day. Thousands of Mathadis (head loaders) also stayed away from work places, in support of the bandh.
