Partial response in Uttar Pradesh
Traders’ unions and associations and the Samajwadi Party’s call evoked partial response in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. The shutdown was supported by various parties, including the BSP and BJP.
The SP alleged its activists were beaten up by the police at many places, including Lucknow. Party workers assembled in small groups at city party offices in Kaiserbagh, Purania, Balaganj and other parts of the State capital. A handful also sneaked near the Vidhan Bhavan and torched an effigy.
However, some shops opened in the afternoon. Various district markets also remained shut. All parties, except the Congress, came forward to take credit for the ‘success’ of the bandh.
