2G scam: CBI court grants Chandolia bail

A special CBI court granted bail to RK Chandolia, former private secretary of former Telecom Minister A Raja in the 2G scam case on Thursday. With Chandolia being released on bail, the number of 2G accused who are yet to breathe fresh air include Raja and former Telecom Secretary Sidharth Behura. Chandolia, who has been in jail since his arrest on February 2, this year, was granted the relief on furnishing a personal bond of Rs 3 lakh with two sureties of the like amount. All 12 other accused, arrested in the case, have now secured bail.

The court, while granting bail to Chandolia observed that Chandolia was only a private secretary to MOC and IT and did not have any independent powers. Special CBI Judge OP Saini said, "Raja was the political head of Department of Telecommunications whereas co-accused Behura was its administrative head. As such, with due respect, his case cannot be equated with these two accused." Notably, judge Saini granted bail to Chandolia despite CBI opposing his plea saying he, Raja and Behura were public servants and formed the 'core sector' of conspiracy”.
